From Components to Complete Systems
Industry players from industrial manufacturing will meet at the traditional trade fair highlight in Stuttgart, namely Motek/Bondexpo, from the 10th through the 13th of October, 2023. Together with the 16th Bondexpo international trade fair for bonding technology, the 41st Motek international trade fair for automation in production and assembly looks at production as an overall concept – from components to complete systems. Motek/Bondexpo provides manufacturing companies with practical, implementable solutions for current and future challenges.
Managing directors, investment decision-makers, purchasing agents, factory outfitters, developers, engineers and designers from industrial practice hold Motek/Bondexpo in high esteem as a proven and indispensable event every autumn. “Because they’re looking for concrete, practical solutions to improve their processes and make them more economical, and they find them at Motek/Bondexpo,” emphasises Rainer Bachert, project manager at trade fair promoters P. E. Schall. “Exhibitors and expert visitors alike take advantage of the unique selling point of this trade fair – the portrayal of complete processes in industrial production. Its practical, pragmatic approach and concrete, implementable solutions have been convincing trade fair visitors for decades,” says Bachert.
Thematic Relevance and a Reliable Trade Fair Concept
Motek/Bondexpo is an indisputably unique platform for investment decisions regarding systems planning, process engineering and the sustainability of all processes, because it’s grounded in reality. “For suppliers as well as users, efficiency, sustainability and flexibility are existentially important parameters for success in production,” points out the project manager. “International crises, climate change, the energy transition, geopolitical upheavals, rising costs and the shortage of qualified personnel have a decisive impact on economic and social events,” summarises Bachert. “Manufacturing companies need concrete, workable support in this regard so that they can remain competitive. As a proven working trade fair, Motek/Bondexpo demonstrates how they can easily get started with the automation and digitalisation of products and processes. It presents ergonomic and age-appropriate workstations and supports the simplification and optimisation of all processes,” stresses Bachert.
The range of topics covered by Motek/Bondexpo provides manufacturing companies with everything they need to cope with the tremendous challenges they’re facing today – for example, networked, intelligent production components such as grippers with sensors, handling systems, handling solutions, intelligent screwdriving technology, smart linear technology, mechatronic systems, smart drives and feed components. Assembly assistance systems are also amongst the core issues dealt with at Motek/Bondexpo, i.e. systems for manual and semi-automatic workstations, for assisted assembly and order picking, robot-based bin picking, co-working with cobots, automated parts staging and automated parts discharge. Finally, solutions for easy implementation and initial start-up are also covered at Motek such as simulation by means of digital twins, plug & play solutions and starter kits.
Smart, Networked Products for Feeding, Handling and Assembly
Getting started easily with automation, improved processes for energy-efficient and resource-saving production, as well as digitalised, easy-to-use production components are urgently required by many companies now. “Software is playing an increasingly important role in this regard,” explains project manager Bachert, “because software-supported processes and modern assistance systems are a big advantage in terms of ergonomics, flexibility and resource conservation.” AI methods (artificial intelligence) are being used to an ever-greater extent and are supporting production, for example with regard to zero-defects manufacturing.
In customary fashion, suppliers and users will discuss the issues with each other in person and on an equal footing at Motek/Bondexpo 2023, in order to be able to produce even more economically and sustainably. “Together with the fully integrated Bondexpo trade fair, Motek will once again offer a proven platform for decision-makers to update their plans by means of a professional exchange of ideas,” says Bettina Schall, managing director of trade fair promoters P. E. Schall. “Motek/Bondexpo unites pragmatism, practicality and future viability. It’s solution-oriented and portrays the entire value creation chain in industrial manufacturing, thus making it truly unique.” And that’s why the 41st Motek and the 16th Bondexpo are firmly scheduled as the industry highlight for modern production automation: industry players will meet in Stuttgart from the 10th through the 13th of October, 2023.

The aspects of efficiency, sustainability and flexibility are important success parameters for production. Every year, the exhibitors at Motek/Bondexpo show immediately applicable innovations that can be of immediate benefit to manufacturing companies. As Igus did in this example at the last Motek in Hall 7:
“When we think about the robot, we have said that the best thing is to have a chain on the robot arm that can be telescoped. People always said it couldn’t be done. But then we approached it and just did it. Look at this TRX tube, I can telescope it wonderfully. I can do over 30 % length change here, so it can go in perfectly on the robot.”, says Dieter Reitz, Sales Manager e-kette® Germany in a quote direct from the trade show.
The round design of TRX in the easy design is resistant and enables the insertion and removal of assembled cables. These are also the benefits of this world first for the user:
- Slim design
- Easy installation
- Minimization of purchased parts
This has brought the Igus team two top awards at once: Winner of the iF Design Award 2022 and Winner of the Red Dot Design Award 2022.

Over the years, Motek has evolved into a significant benchmark with high standards where automation is concerned. “And this is why we’re expecting another vibrant and inspiring trade fair in 2023, where industry players will engage in concrete technical dialogues and discuss solutions that are directly related to manufacturing practice,” notes Rainer Bachert, longstanding Motek/Bondexpo project manager. “After successful staging of Motek/Bondexpo in 2022 with exhibitors from 24 countries, many participants have already made firm bookings for next year, because this is where they meet up with precisely the right target groups for their new product launches.”
Thilo Lutz, managing director of Utz Ratio Technik, describes Motek as the industry’s leading trade fair. The company from Korb, Germany, considers this exactly the right place to be because they’re not only able to maintain contact with existing and future customers, they get together with their suppliers here as well. For Andrea Alboni as well, general manager for Western Europe at Universal Robots, Motek is one of the annual must-attend events for engaging in an important exchange with potentially interested parties, as well as new and existing customers. And thus for industry players from the field of production automation, Motek/Bondexpo is traditionally a mandatory event every fall.
Industrial Manufacturing – Fully Revamped and Focused on the Future
Motek looks back on an impressive 40-year history on its way to becoming one of the most important industrial trade fairs. The entire value creation sequence for industrial manufacturing is portrayed here. As a fully integrated event, Bondexpo showcases the increasingly important bonding technologies – they play a central role in industrial production due to the use of new materials and future-oriented joining technologies. As a result, decision-makers find targeted, highly practical and implementable answers to their questions concerning investment projects at the Motek/Bondexpo trade fair duo. Motek/Bondexpo has thus evolved into an effective and indispensable marketing tool for many companies. “Motek – that’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us,” remarks Ulrich Moser of IEF-Werner impressively.
Future Production at Motek/Bondexpo 2023
Never before have the issues of efficiency, sustainability and flexibility been as important as they are now. They’re not only important success factors, they’ve also become an existential necessity in all sectors – industrial as well as non-industrial. Economical and rational allocation of all resources is a concern shared by economy and society at all levels. Consequently, expert visitors will bring along lots of questions about the complex issues of energy and climate protection, and the exhibitors will prepare themselves for this challenge with new solutions.
The Arena of Integration (AoI), for which programme and organisational preparations have now begun, will also focus extensively on these important issues of the future. Fresh and forward-looking ideas are also being eagerly awaited in the Start-Up Area. “Industrial production is well on its way to becoming even more efficient, environmentally friendly and economical. With this in mind, Motek/Bondexpo is an ideal business platform for the capital goods industry, because it supports all players in furnishing manufacturing processes with a modern and future-oriented structure,” observes Bettina Schall, managing director of Schall trade fair promoters. “The dates for the 41st Motek and the 16th Bondexpo – from 10 to 13 October 2023 – should thus already be firmly noted in the calendar today. We look forward to your participation!”

Motek/Bondexpo – a Significant Milestone for the 2022 Fall Trade Fair Season
The traditional Motek/Bondexpo trade fair duo held in Stuttgart from 4 to 7 October 2022 was a great success. The 40th Motek international trade fair for production and assembly automation, together with the 15th Bondexpo international trade fair for bonding technology, was a highly successful and well-attended trade fair highlight for the manufacturing industry this fall.
Frickenhausen, 12 October 2022 – 505 exhibitors from 24 countries came to Stuttgart for Motek/Bondexpo 2022. “Once again, we experienced a lively, inspiring trade fair in four exhibition halls with satisfied exhibitors and expert visitors,” summarises Rainer Bachert, longstanding project manager for Motek/Bondexpo. “We were pleased to welcome 12% more exhibitors here in Stuttgart than in 2021, the relaunch year after the pandemic. We’re very pleased with these strong results.”
In many ways, this year’s trade fair was a celebration of Motek’s 40th anniversary. Original exhibitors, including Murtfeldt, KMT Produktions- und Montagetechnik, Afag, IEF-Werner, Föhrenbach, Utz Ratio Technik and Zimmer, were honoured on the first day of the trade fair by trade fair promoters P. E. Schall. “Throughout all the years, Motek has been a significant milestone with high standards in the field of automation,” observed Achim Gauß, managing director of the Zimmer Group.
“The Best Thing That’s Ever Happened to Us”
“40 years participation at Motek – that’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us,” remarked Ulrich Moser of IEF-Werner. “For years, we’ve been receiving more enquiries at Motek than at any other event. It’s perfect for presenting new products,” continued Moser. “The more explanation the product requires, the better Motek works as a marketing tool. We come together with the right customers and visitors here, and meetings take place directly at the relevant exhibits.” Ulrich Moser’s conclusion after four decades of participation at the trade fair: “Future prospects for Motek are outstanding!”
“Central Trade Fair Anchor in Our Annual Events Calendar”
Many voices have unanimously expressed their opinion that there’s no substitute for the exchange of ideas at a live trade fair. Manuel Rösinger from Bott said: “For us, Motek is the central trade fair anchor in our annual events calendar. We speak with customers and users about the optimisation of assembly operations at everything from manual to fully automated workstation systems.” Rösinger also stressed the fact that the right contact persons meet up at Motek/Bondexpo. The entire value creation chain for industrial manufacturing is presented at the event, and suppliers of solutions and systems get together with the right target groups. Thilo Utz, managing director of Utz Ratio Technik, reports that he has also had the same positive and successful experience: “We’ve had forty successful years at the trade fair – we meet our customers here, as well as our suppliers.”
Flexibility, Efficiency and Sustainability as Success Parameters
Many exhibitors focused on manufacturing flexibility, efficiency and sustainability as success parameters. Motek/Bondexpo once again provided the right setting and a suitable platform for exchanging information, as well as for cultivating customer relations and initiating business. For Igus too, Motek has been a “very important trade fair” for decades, affirmed Alexa Heinzelmann – the Cologne-based company focuses primary attention on improving all motion solutions and components. Sebastian Walter from Universal Robots also confirmed: “For us, the beginning of October always means: It’s time for Motek!” This has been the case each and every year, because Motek is “a highly user-oriented and very genuine trade fair”, affirmed Walter. Trade fair visitors come to our booth with specific robotics issues, which are mutually discussed and finally transformed into implementable solutions.
Elmar Worms from Bosch Rexroth also meets the right trade fair audience at Motek: “Our products supply answers to the questions that concern the trade fair visitors.” Amongst others, solutions for autonomous pallet transport, collaborative robotics and modern screwdriving technologies met with great interest this year at the booth operated by the company from Lohr, Germany.
Lots of Young Trade Fair Visitors on the Move
Not only in the Startup Area, but rather in all four exhibition halls, there were conspicuously large numbers of young visitors this year. Amongst other factors this was due to the comprehensive supplementary programme including the expert forum on “Safety and Automation” held by Pilz from Ostfildern, Germany, which presented the most up-to-date information on trends covering all aspects of safe automation. Young companies in the Startup Area in hall 1 with their new developments for production automation were of course targeted by young expert visitors as well. For example, Benjamin Volkert from Volkert Maschinen- und Anlagenbau demonstrated how users can familiarise themselves with cobot functions and modes of operation in a practical manner at his booth.
Six Use Cases at the Arena of Integration
Once again in 2022, the Arena of Integration (AoI) was at the heart of the Software for Assembly exhibition area in hall 1. Participating companies prepared a total of six use cases. For example, macio and sereact offered two levels of digitalisation and automation in production: a collaborative robot was used to pick various items from a single-sort container and place them into a load carrier. The cobot worked entirely autonomously thanks to AI-supported control software, which allowed it to perceive its surroundings and identify precise gripping points, even for complex objects, and to develop manipulation strategies. Another example of AoI involved digital order processing through the use of virtual commissioning and a digital twin as demonstrated by ruhlamat’s and machineering’s use case. Thyssen Krupp Automation presented an example of assembly digitalisation using a manufacturing execution system (MES) for both new and existing facilities (greenfield and brownfield).
On the Way to Normality
“Together with our exhibitors, we’re very pleased to have welcomed 24,236 visitors from 64 countries to Motek/Bondexpo 2022 in Stuttgart,” exclaimed Bettina Schall, managing director of trade fair promoters P. E. Schall. “This is almost on par with the levels of internationalism experienced before the pandemic began, at which time we welcomed visitors from 77 countries, and once again confirms the great significance of this trade fair for the production and assembly automation sector.”
Save the dates now for the 41st Motek and the 16th Bondexpo: the automation sector will meet again in Stuttgart from the 10th through the 13th of October, 2023.
